5 Facts You May Not Know About the Polyester Label

Polyester Mylar LabelsWhen you decide to order labels from a manufacturer, one of the options you will be given is the polyester label. What exactly is this label great for and what are its main characteristics? Is this kind of a label ideal for what you require or are you better off with another kind of label?

To help you come up with an educated decision regarding this label, here are some facts about it:

  1. Polyester labels are made out of PET or polyethylene terephthalate. One specific type of polyester label, called Mylar, is made out of BoPET, or biaxially-oriented polyethylene terephthalate. This is a special kind of stretched polyester material that also goes by the trade names Hostaphan and Melinex.
  2. Polyester Mylar labels are great for applications where exposure to harsh conditions is a given. Extremely hot temperatures, very cold conditions, rough handling, and exposure to chemicals are just some of the elements that this particular kind of label can withstand. These labels can also endure constant scuffing, exposure to sunlight, abrasion, water, and do not tear easily.
  3. Polyester labels can be used for a wide variety of applications, and these include inventory and asset tagging, identification tags, warning and instructional labels, barcode and UID tags, product labeling, and many more. As mentioned earlier, these can withstand so many harsh situations and various weather conditions, that it is ideal for so many things. You can use these to brand products, mark items with warnings and instructions, and tag containers with content names.
  4. Polyester labels can come in many guises. While the most common polyester label color is white, these can also come in other colors, in clear, and in metallic. These can also come in either matte or gloss finish, depending on what you want. The clear label is often used by those who want a “no-label” appearance for their products, while the metallic colored ones are chosen by those who do not want to use aluminum foil labels for their business, but desire the metal-like appeal of the label.
  5. You can print anything on these labels and with the use of a variety of printing and marking methods. Probably the most popular marking method used on these is laser printing, since this produces sharp, smooth, and glossy prints. Other options include digital printing, thermal transfers, and silk-screening.

Some people, despite the fact that these labels are already very durable, choose to have an additional protective layer added to this in the shape of laminates. Others choose to give their labels a 3-dimensional look via a process called “doming” which essentially creates domed labels that are ultra-durable and very eye catching. You can also choose what kind of adhesive you want to use for these labels, with some being heavy-duty and difficult to remove, and others being removable and transferable.
